After our June wedding in 1965, Paula and I drove our old 1939 Chevy down to the Henderson Arkansas area of Lake Norfork. We stayed the weekend in the honeymoon cabin at Crystal Cove Resort. One of the outside activities was to go water-skiing. We drove down to the boat dock at Henderson which was near the Ferry which took cars across the lake to the Mountain Home, Arkansas side. We rented what was called a speed boat. It was 14 ft. long and had a 40-horsepower outboard motor. The lady who rented us the speedboat was quite helpful. She said it was against the rules to start near the dock that was close to the Ferry’s wake. But then made an exception in our case since Paula had never driven a speedboat and I’d never skied. She instructed me on how to get set in the water and told Paula what to do. Paula’s part was simple - just ram the lever all the way forward for this 40 horsepower outboard. I got set, Paula gunned it, I popped right up and away we went. We returned to Crystal Cover each summer for many years and still vacation there occasionally. Lake Norfork is a beautiful lake in Northern Arkansas. Other terrific lakes in our region, which are also great for skiing and fishing, include Bull Shoals and Table Rock. 12/31/1999 |
